Yoga Mala Summer and Winter Solstice Celebrations
at The Yoga Loft

Each summer and winter solstice, yogis gather at The Yoga Loft in the early morning hours to honor our connection to nature and each other. Through the challenge and discipline of a Yoga Mala (108 Sun Salutations), we pay homage to the yogis who’ve come before us and the tradition they’ve developed through their practice. We also make an offering in honor of our connection to all beings—past, present, and future—by collecting a donation to San Francisco Street Outreach Services, a mobile health-care unit that serves the homeless.

It’s become my favorite practice of the year and many students have expressed feeling the same. There’s a deeply nourishing effect in ritualizing our practice in this way. By meditating on the many forms in which our practice serves ourselves and others, we transform 108 Sun Salutations into a symbolic act of prayer, offering gratitude and thanks for all we receive. Through intention, the solitary effort toward self-transformation becomes a celebration and we experience our connection to the world—inside and out.

Open to everyone, participants should feel free to do as many of the 108 Sun Salutations as is reasonable, taking breaks for rest when it’s appropriate. A simple standing version of the full Sun Salutation is offered as an alternative for those who prefer a less strenuous practice. Students are also encouraged to come and sit in meditation.

This Yoga Mala is generously hosted by The Yoga Loft.

Looking Inward
The Power of Internalization in Yoga Practice

Yoga practice is widely accepted and held in esteem by health professionals and yoga practitioners alike as effective in building flexibility, strength, and agility with myriad health benefits. The essence of the power of the practice, however, begins to reveal itself when the yogi learns to develop the capacity to simultaneously direct skillful physical movement with the mind and the senses steadily focused inward.

This workshop incorporates a vinyasa asana sequence with breath, concentration, and meditation techniques as tools to explore the process of yogic internalization. Turning the senses inward, or pratyahara, is an essential development on the yogic path—opening the doorway to greater clarity and skillfulness in observation and action.

The September 2009 issue of Yoga Journal features Jennifer’s article, “Come to Your Senses,” on developing pratyahara in asana practice.
